Yesterday, Google added a new feature, called Google instant in its search engine. It helps the internet users to find information faster by showing relevant results as a query is typed on the screen. As users get this immediate feedback, they’re able to refine their searches more quickly and find the results that more precisely match what they need. And according to Google Engineers, it can save 2-5 seconds per search. The logic behind this enhancement is that generally people type slowly, but read quickly, typically taking 300 milliseconds between keystrokes, but only 30 milliseconds to glance at another part of the page. This means that you can scan a results page while you type.
Now with the help of Google Instant, we can get to the right content much faster than before because we don’t have to finish typing the full search term, or even press the search button. If you don’t want to see results as you type, you can turn off Google Instant by clicking the link next to the search box on any search results page. This feature is not available for mobile internet users.
According to Google, there are 3 benefits of Google Instant:
- Faster Searches: Google Instant predicts the search query and shows the result before you finish typing, in this way it saves 2-5 seconds per search.
- Smarter Predictions: Sometimes we don’t know what we are looking for, in that case, these predictions can be proved very useful.
- Instant Results: Start typing and results appear right before your eyes. Even faster than your thoughts!
