NEW DELHI: A software professional has been sentenced to one year of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000 slapped on him by a special CBI court in Chennai for hacking the internet account being held by the PIB.

"The case was registered on the allegation that N G Arunkumar, software professional and resident of Bangalore unauthorisedly and illegally used the user-id and password of broadband internet connection of Press Information Bureau, Chennai as well as other 52 BSNL broadband subscribers," a CBI spokesperson said here on Friday.

It was alleged that he "caused a wrongful loss of Rs 38,248 to these subscribers with corresponding wrongful gain to himself," he said.

CBI Investigation revealed that Arunkumar logged on to BSNL broadband internet connection as if he was the authorised genuine user and made alteration in the computer database pertaining broadband internet user accounts of these subscribers.

"After completion of trial the Additional chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Egmore, Chennai found the accused guilty for the offences and convicted him," the official said.

In another case, a former senior official of Reserve Bank of India has been sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment by a special CBI court in Ahmedabad in graft case.
